Aerial view of Cromwell's Fort, Harbour Area, Inverness, looking W.

SC 1867199

Description Aerial view of Cromwell's Fort, Harbour Area, Inverness, looking W.

Date 1996

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1867199

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This area of the Longman Industrial Estate was the site of Cromwell's Fort, built in 1653-8 and demolished in 1662. Within the site is the Clock Tower which is supposed to be the only remaining structure of the fort. However, it's more likely that it dates from the time a hemp factory occupied the site (C18). This area was also the site of the Longman airfield which was opened in 1933 and closed in 1947. On the far side of the river is Thornbush Quay which was built in 1817. The first harbour was built c. 1650 and periodically thereafter quays were added between Waterloo Bridge and the mouth of the river. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
