Scope and Content This is a general view of Inverness, mainly focussing on the eastern side of the river. The Kessock Bridge was opened in 1982 replacing the historic Kessock Ferry which had operated between South and North Kessock for at least 400 years. Above it on the Black Isle is Ord Hill which has a vitrified fort at its summit. Inverness Castle is at lower left. Though there is a record of a castle in Inverness going back to the C12, this present building dates from the C19 and very little relates to earlier structures. It functions at present (2020) as the Sheriff Court. Porterfield Prison (opened 1902) sits below it and to its right at bottom of picture is the Inverness Thistle Football Club ground at Kingsmills. This was sold for development when Inverness Thistle and Inverness Caledonian combined to form Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC and a new stadium was opened on the Longman in 1996. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
