SC 1865031

Description Oblique aerial view from Eigg (near Bay of Laig) to the Isle of Rum, looking NW.

Date 1994

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1865031

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The dominating summits of Sgurr nan Gillean and Ainshval (L) and Askival (R) flank Glen Dibidil which slopes down to a break in the rocky shoreline. The Glen has the site of a pre-clearance settlement, while inland is a group of shieling huts. To the right, the terrain dips towards Loch Scresort, which is out of view, but a pale yellow coastal patch within shot may be the former township of Bagh na h-Uamha or An Uamh ("the cave"). A 7th-8th C cross-slab, found in beach shingle there, has been re-erected nearby. A coastal cave and midden nearby has yielded a number of finds, including Iron Age pottery. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
