Scope and Content This is a general view of the centre of Inverness on the east side of the river. The railway into Inverness Station is prominent on the right and to its left is phase 1 of the Eastgate Centre which was opened in 1983. Between the two is the area which was scheduled for phase 2 of the Easgate Centre, but at this time was being used as a car park. Hamilton's Auction Mart is also in this area. The Mart replaced the roundhouse (engine shed), which was demolished in the 1960s. Markets were held on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Inverness Royal Academy (IRA) Midmills building is at centre of photo. The IRA was founded in 1792 and moved to the Crown in 1895 when it moved to Midmills. In 1977 it moved to a new building at Culduthel. To its left is Crown Church (1900-1901) and Crown Primary School, which was built as the High School in 1879. At centre left, just coming into view, is Inverness Thistle football ground at Kingsmills. It is now (2020) the site of Kingsmills Care Home. At bottom right, also just coming into view, is the original building for Millburn Academy (opened in 1961). Inverness Castle can be seen at centre top and Porterfield prison, (opened 1902) is at top left. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
