Scope and Content General oblique aerial view of Craigmillar, Edinburgh The area was largely built to rehouse the slum-dwellers on the Canongate and the High Riggs areas of Edinburgh in the late 20s - early 30s. Once one of Edinburgh’s most run-down areas characterised by social deprivation, 2007 saw the start of a massive regeneration with plans to build over 3,000 new homes with around 500 of these for social renting. 5 new schools plus substantial industrial, retail and leisure space are also planned. The area consists mainly of inter-war and post-war public housing schemes, ranging from private bungalows to two Edinburgh Council-owned 15-stored high rise tower blocks constructed in 1964 with the surrounding mono-pitch-roofed flats in 1968. A BMX track and play area in the form of a waving figure can be seen on the right. From the air the layout shows the flats and housing forming enclosed squares and crescents. These enclosed spaces give a feeling of privacy to each area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
