Scope and Content Newhall Farm, settlements, Dumfries and Galloway Only 10m apart, two small defended settlements lie near the summit of Newhall Hill, which commands views of nearby strategic passes into Upper Nithsdale and into Langholm. Why two settlements should have been built so close to each other is not known. They may have been occupied at the same time, but it is more likely that one was abandoned before the other was built. Settlements like this probably consisted of a few timber-built round-houses with a yard for animals and storage. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
