Scope and Content A collection of photographs of prehistoric and early medieval sculpture in Aberdeenshire, Argyll, Angus and Moray. Subjects include prehistoric sculpture at Blackhills, Moray, Pictish symbol stones at Crichie, Brandsbutt, Picardy and Flemington, cross-slab at Ellon, animal carvings at Glen Domhain.
Archive History A note appended to C A Gordon's posthumously published article in Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 'The Pictish animals observed' (1967), states that 'The photographic record of Pictish symbol stones which was built up by the late C. A. Gordon and was the source of many of the plates illustrating this paper, will be lodged with the National Monuments Record of Scotland'. No accession record has yet been identified, but the format of cataloguing indicates acquired by RCAHMS prior to c.1983.

Author of numerous articles with a particular focus on early medieval sculpture, including: 'Carving Technique on the Symbol Stones of North-East Scotland' (1956); 'Carved stone at Blackhills, Moray' (1956); 'Carved stone at Cross-stone, Ellon' (1958); 'The Ellon Castle estate' (in Godsman, J, A history of the burgh and parish of Ellon, Aberdeenshire') (1958); 'Professor James Garden's letters to John Aubrey, 1692-1695' (1960); The Pictish animals observed' (1967).
