Scope and Content Plan of Inveraray Gasworks, Inveraray, Argyll Inveraray Gasworks was founded in 1841 by the 7th Duke of Argyll. The original process was used until a refit in 1949. It served the burgh of Inveraray with coal-gas until its closure in 1964. Coal tar was heated in the retort house to give off gas which was condensed in the external condensers. An 'exhauster-engine' in the engine-house forced the gas through filters in the purifier house and pumped it to the gas-holders. Coal-gas was first piped to customers from a central gasworks in London in 1812. Despite its fumes, gas soon replaced oil for commercial lighting because it allowed longer working hours and gaslit buildings were safer and cheaper to insure. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
