Scope and Content Fort at Broomholm, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fort is at the summit of Broomholm Knowe. It is now denuded, but excavation has shown it to have had at least two phases of occupation. The second fort was slightly smaller and occupied the S half of the original one. This is an aerial view of the site. One rounded corner can be clearly seen as a cropmark, and from there, further sections of the fort can be traced. Much of the earlier fort, except the SE side, can still be traced at ground level. The site has been excavated. As well as the two Roman forts, an enclosed prehistoric fort and a post-Roman round house were also found. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
