Scope and Content Cropmarks of a fort at Greenhillhead, Dumfries and Galloway Aerial survey first recorded the cropmarks of a fort, completely ploughed-down, immediately adjacent to Greenhillhead steading in 1975. Dry conditions in 1989 produced these fine cropmarks of the fort's ditches. Study of the cropmarks suggests two phases of occupation, the two outer ditches belonging to one phase, the broad inner ditch the other. Aerial survey can reveal the remains of buried archaeological sites. Cereal crops, such as barley, grow to different heights: there is better growth over a buried ditch than over buried stones. This height difference is visible from the air as a cropmark. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
