Scope and Content Aerial view of Lochmaben Castle, Dumfries and Galloway On this promontory which projects into Castle Loch, Edward I built a 'pele' or earthwork castle to replace the nearby motte, captured in 1298. The pele consisted of two roughly rectangular enclosures. Within the inner ward (now partly overlain by the later stone castle) lay a timber tower. Occupying the outer ward was the pele-toun, which housed craftsmen and labourers. Following Bannockburn, the Scots captured the pele of Lochmaben. However, by 1336 it was once more in English hands, and a stone castle was constructed here in the 1360s. Archibald the Grim, lord of Galloway, finally took Lochmaben for the Scots in 1384.
