Scope and Content Cultivation remains, Holyrood Park and environs, City of Edinburgh During the Ice Age the west-facing slopes of Holyrood Park were severely eroded, but stony clays were deposited on the eastern slopes. This has resulted in sufficient depth of soil for cultivation. On the flatter ground lie swathes of rig and furrow where ploughing formed long curved banks, now preserved in Prestonfield Golf Course and on the lower slopes around Dunsapie Loch. Flights of cultivation terraces rise up the steeper slopes. The last record of tillage in the Park dates to 1610, when sheep grazing was the main agricultural activity. Because of the lack of intrusive development in recent times the farming remains have been fossilised as an important record of the rural past. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
