Scope and Content Fort at Easter Happrew, Scottish Borders This Roman fort is at Easter Happrew. It is built on a level plateau, with steep sides to the N, S and E. The fort guarded the junction of the natural routes through the area - the Tweed Valley, Lyne Water and the gap between the Meldon hills. This is an aerial view of the site. The outline of the fort can be seen in the lower half of the image. Above it can be seen the roughly rectangular annexe. Below the fort is a quarry which provided gravel for the road surfaces within the fort. The site has been excavated. Finds included pottery, glass and a sestertius of Vespasian. The fort was possibly built during the time of Agricola, but probably quickly abandoned in favour of the fort at Lyne, roughly a kilometre to the NW. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
