Scope and Content Fort at Lyne, Scottish Borders This fort at Lyne is on a plateau above a bend in Lyne Water. It was built to replace the first century fort at Easter Happrew which was abandoned c.AD 86. The new fort was built close to a Roman road built when the area was reoccupied in the 2nd century. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort is clearly visible in the centre of the image. It is protected by a turf rampart and up to three ditches. The S and W sides of the fort are additionally protected by the river and its steep banks. The site has been excavated. It was built in the late Antonine period, but only seems to have been occupied for a few years. No inscriptions have been found on the site, but it probably housed a 'cohors milliaria equitata' (cavalry regiment). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
