Scope and Content Fort at Dumyat Hill, Stirling The fort is built on the SW slope of Dumyat Hill. It has good views over the Forth and to Stirling. Steep crags form natural defences to the E so most of the man-made defences are to the W. There was more than one phase of construction. This aerial view of the fort shows the defences. The earliest were a pair of walls with a single entrance to the W. The later defences consist of a dun-like structure within its own wall. This is linked to the earlier wall. It is possible that the name Dumyat originally meant the fort itself rather than the hill. It might mean Dun Myat or Dun of the Maeatae, who were the local tribe.
