Scope and Content Coroghan Castle, Canna, Highland Coroghon Castle is the only pre-19th century castle in the Small Isles. It stands on top of a stack that juts out into the sea at the east end of Canna and is only accessible by a steep path. The castle is said to have been used in the late 17th century by Donald MacDonald of Clanranald as a prison to confine his wife. This view shows Coroghon Castle (centre) and Coroghon Barn (foreground) with the isolated stack, Alman, above. The castle probably dates to the early 17th century but there is a 16th century reference to the stack being used as a refuge in times of trouble and it is possible that it replaced an earlier fortification. Coroghon Barn is of 18th century date. A survey of Canna and Sanday was undertaken by the Royal Commission of Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland in 1994 to record all the archaeological sites and monuments together with the landscape in which they lie. This survey is published as RCAHMS Broadsheet 5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
