Scope and Content Rum from the south-west corner of Canna, Small Isles, Inner Hebrides, Highland Rum is a National Nature Reserve and was bought by the Nature Conservancy Council (now Scottish Natural Heritage) in 1957. It is a mountainous island. The only cultivable land is to be found at the three main settled areas of Kilmory in the north, Kinloch in the north-east and Harris in the south-west. This aerial view is taken from the south-west corner of Canna and shows the rugged terrain of Rum. The Cuillins of Rum, with their Norse names of Askival, Hellival, Trollval and Orval, are visible. These mountains are the remains of an ancient volcano. In the early 19th century, Rum supported a community of over 400 but was 'cleared' to make way for sheep and deer. In the late 19th century, the island was bought by the Bullough family who built a magnificent shooting lodge, Kinloch Castle, at the head of Loch Scresort on the north-east of the island.
