Scope and Content Aerial view of Upper and Lower Dens Works, Princes Street, Dundee In the centre there are five buildings grouped around a courtyard. Four of these are, from the left, Bell Mill, North Mill, Dens Street Mill, and St. Roque's Mill. The other building may be New Mill, which was added in 1935. These are the Lower Dens Works. Across the street from North Mill is a very long building, known as the Upper Dens Mill, which was built in 1833. It was then heightened and extended in 1851. Behind that is another long building, with its gable facing the Upper Dens Mill. It is also part of the Upper Dens Works, and was converted to flats in the 1980s. During the 19th century many people moved from rural areas in Scotland to cities, such as Dundee, seeking employment. In 1831, for example, the population in Dundee was 45,355 and 20 years later it was 78,981. The founder of the Baxters company, William Baxter (1766-1854), opened his first mill for spinning flax in 1822 in Lower Dens, Dundee. During the 19th century the company added many buildings to the complex, becoming the biggest manufacturers of linen in the world around 1840. They maintained this position for another 50 years. Due to the demise of the textile trade in Dundee many of the buildings were demolished in the 1980s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
