Scope and Content Aerial view from the south-west of Town Centre, Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire Cumbernauld Town Centre was built between 1963 and 1972 as the world's first multi-level town centre. It was designed by Cumbernauld Development Corporation to house local amenities in one large complex, including shops, offices, community facilities and administrative buildings with underground parking and pedestrian access via a series of ramps and walkways. This shows Phase I of the original Town Centre structure with its long thin white roof with darker band of windows below, seen top right in this image. Phase II extends to the left over the road which takes traffic in and out of the centre of the complex. The two large buildings below are superstores, and the complex in the bottom left is the Inland Revenue offices. The building with the pyramid-shaped roof and pointed spire is St Mungo's Church. The ambitious design for Cumbernauld New Town included a variety of housing types grouped around the central Town Centre building. Areas of housing and parts of the central area have since been demolished, but new housing continues to extend into the surrounding areas. Cumbernauld Town Centre and the earliest areas of Cumbernauld New Town Housing have been selected as two of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments.
