Scope and Content Aerial view of Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel, Loch Etive, Argyll and Bute Dunstaffnage Castle was built before 1275 by the MacDougall Lords of Lorn and taken from them by Robert Bruce after a battle and a siege around 1309. The first Campbell Earl of Argyll became custodian in 1321-2. Dunstaffnage Castle occupies a narrow headland in the mouth of Loch Etive. The position gave control of access to and from the sea into Loch Etive. A watch could also be kept upon the Firth of Lorn and the eastern entrance to the Sound of Mull. Until well into the 18th century, Argyll's sea-lanes were more strategically important than its roads. Most trade went by boat, and it was easier to sail on the sea lochs than to march through the mountainous interior where robbery and ambush were common. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
