Scope and Content The Shore, Leith, Edinburgh This is the heartland of the original dock area in Leith. Boats came up the Water of Leith to moor on either side of the Shore. The grandeur of many buildings and the street names of Leith attest to the trading links and wealth that were common here. Throughout the 19th century the docks were extended and improved by various projects to construct artificial moorings, protection for the boats and all the accoutrements of a busy harbour. By the end of the 20th century, however, the docks were run down. Late 20th-century alterations include the building of the Scottish Office, taking place at the bottom of the photo. At the same time many old warehouses have been converted and new housing built. Land reclamation is changing the face of Leith dockland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
