Scope and Content Dornoch Firth Bridge from north-west, Highland The Dornoch Firth Bridge links the areas around Tain and Dornoch, carrying the A9 over the Firth. It was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1991. This aerial view, taken in the year the bridge opened, shows the bridge linking Cuthill sands (bottom left), and Tarlogie scalps (top right). The town of Tain can be seen (centre top). The Dornoch Firth is a designated national scenic area, and both Dornoch and Tain are popular holiday resorts. Tain is probably most famous today as the home of the Glenmorangie whisky distillery. It is Scotland's oldest Royal Burgh, being granted a royal charter by King Malcolm III in 1066. This permitted the town to offer the sanctuary of the church and also excluded its merchants from certain taxes, encouraging the town's prosperity. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
