Scope and Content Aerial view of Fortrose, Highland Fortrose began as a settlement belonging to the canons of Fortrose Cathedral. It became a royal burgh in 1590, but in 1691 was said to be still a 'little village'. By the later 19th century, the town was an established holiday resort. The harbour (left) was constructed in 1813-17 by Thomas Telford. The ruins of the medieval cathedral are visible to the right of the centre of the picture. These were quarried for stone to build Inverness Citadel in 1652-3. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
