Scope and Content Aerial view of Tarbat Church and churchyard at Portmahomack, Ross and Cromarty There may have been an Early Christian monastery at Portmahomack. Excavations have revealed a group of long-cist burials, which may be an indication of early Christian activity. Around this church which is of medieval origin but dates mainly to 1756, there are traces of a cropmark which resembles the vallum or enclosure at the monastery in Iona. The vallum marked the boundary of the Early Christian monastery. Three grave-markers with simple inscribed crosses have been found, as well as many fragments of Pictish carved stones which probably date to the 9th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
