Scope and Content Aerial view of Cawdor Castle, Highland Cawdor Castle lies c.7km south-west of Nairn. Since the 13th century, the Calders have been Thanes of Cawdor (or Calder), and the castle was built c.1454 when William, Thane of Cawdor, received a royal licence 'to erect his castle of Cawdor'. This aerial view shows the defensive site of the castle, with a steep bank to the west (bottom) and ditches on the other three sides. The original 15th-century tower-house is on the right, with additions of the 16th-19th centuries adjoining on the left. The castle passed into the hands of the Campbells of Argyll with the marriage in 1510 of Muriel Calder to Sir John Campbell. Still lived in today, parts of the castle and its grounds are open to visitors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
