Scope and Content Aerial view of medieval core of Aberdeen Medieval Aberdeen, a Royal Burgh by 1179, was a trading community with an economy based on fishing and making goods out of animal products like wool and leather. Though it had a castle by 1264, the town was unwalled. This aerial view shows the town-house or tolbooth on the extreme centre right, and St Nicholas Church on the centre left. The castle has vanished. It was destroyed by warfare in the 14th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
