Scope and Content Aerial view of Boyne Castle, Grampian The remains of Boyne Castle lie 2km east of Portsoy. It sits on a spur of land surrounded by the Burn of Boyne on three sides. On the south (top) side is a dry moat. The castle was built in the late 16th century for Sir George Ogilvie of Dunlugas. This aerial view shows the site of the castle. There is a main three-storeyed block with circular towers on its external corners. Blocks of outbuildings form a courtyard (left) with similar towers on the corners of the enclosing wall. This castle was built to replace an earlier castle on the coast - Craig of the Boyne - when Sir George Ogilvie purchased the estate in 1575. In 1731 it was bought by the Earl of Findlater and Seafield and has been uninhabited since. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
