Scope and Content Aerial view of Cardoness Castle, Dumfries & Galloway This aerial view from the south-west, taken in 1994, shows the castle on its rocky knoll, with the remains of its outbuildings in front of it. In front of it is the canalised River Fleet, crossed by the Gatehouse-of- Fleet by-pass on the A75. The building to the right of the castle was the custodian's house. Cardoness Castle was inhabited until the late 17th century by the McCullochs, who were noted for their violent behaviour. The building was given into the care of the Secretary of State in the mid-1920s, and consolidated. Excavation at that time revealed outbuildings to the south and east of the main tower. Cardoness Castle was built in the late 15th century by the McCulloch family, who had been resident locally since at least the late 13th century. It stands on a rocky knoll overlooking the mouth of the River Fleet, and, as late as the 1560s, was considered to be proof against attack by artillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
