Scope and Content Aerial view of formal gardens, Floors Castle, Scottish Borders This shows an aerial view of the formal gardens to the west of the castle. The large rectangle (left) which has been split into three segments may have contained an octagonal maze in the centre. The large walled garden to the top right contains greenhouses where fruit and vegetables for the kitchen were grown. This garden still provides produce for the castle but it has also operated as a garden centre since 1978. The original walled gardens were formerly beside the main entrance gates to the estate but were probably moved to this location in the early to mid-19th century. The outer walled garden (left) originally contained a 91.4m-long glass house with seven 18.2m x 6m glass houses branching out at right angles. Each glass house was used for different plants and fruits. The small building on the bottom left was a summer house, known as the Queen's Room, built for Queen Victoria's visit in 1867 to allow her to enjoy the greenhouses. Floors Castle was built in 1718 for the 1st Duke of Roxburghe and was probably designed by John Vanburgh (1664-1726) with alterations by William Adam (1689-1748). The 6th Duke of Roxburghe commissioned William Playfair (1790-1857) to alter and extend the castle between 1838 and 1849. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
