Scope and Content Gable-end, Nos 20-22 Academy Street, Ayr The 18th century was a period of growth for Scottish burghs. Existing urban centres were expanded. Major building work took place in Ayr between 1780 and 1820. By 1800 it was a fashionable resort town. This is the gable-end of Academy Street in Ayr. These residential houses were built in 1780. At this date, buildings of more than two main storeys were becoming less common in the burghs. The lane is narrow and paved with cobblestones. Around this time, building regulations were starting to be introduced in the burghs. For example, the use of thatching for roofing was forbidden. Stone was now generally used as the building material. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
