Scope and Content Beech Lodge, No 10 Church Hill, Morningside, Edinburgh Church Hill, the district at the top of the hill overlooking Morningside, is also the name of a street running east from the summit to Greenhill Gardens, which was developed in the mid-19th century with large villas for Edinburgh's wealthier citizens. No 10, built c.1845, is typical of the large detached villas lining the street. The house, with a central pediment and a simple cornice supported by ornamental stone brackets above the door, stands in a large walled garden on the south side of the street. The street (and also the district) became known as Church Hill when Dr Thomas Chalmers, leader of the 'Disruption' of the Church of Scotland in 1843, built the first house on the hill overlooking Morningside in 1842, and named it Kirkhill.
