Date: 'July 1965' Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN: Reverse face, gravestone of George Goldie, Glencorse Old Kirk, Midlothian This gravestone commemorates George Goldie, who died in 1745. Within the panel flanked by two finely carved pillars are emblems of death and mortality, a large pair of cross-bones, a skull and an hourglass. The pediment above contains a winged cherub head, symbolising the soul's ascent to heaven. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
