Scope and Content Aerial view of Kilchurn Castle on the banks of Loch Awe, Glenorchy, Argyll Kilchurn Castle was a government base in 1654 when it resisted a Royalist siege, in 1685 during the Earl of Argyll's revolt, and during both Jacobite risings. It was also garrisoned by the Earl of Breadalbane's private army after the 1689 Highland War. Originally, the castle was built on what was almost an island and connected to the shore by a thin strip of land. However, the water-level dropped after 1817 when the river draining the loch was dredged. The 9th Earl of Argyll, unpopular in the Highlands because he used force to take land, was often regarded as an over-mighty subject. Exiled in 1681, he was executed in 1685 after returning with an army to support the unsuccessful Monmouth Rebellion. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
