Scope and Content The collection contains photographic images created during the mid-twentieth century in a number of formats including film negatives of various sizes, 35mm film, glass plate negatives and printed photographs. The subjects include artworks, Edinburgh landmarks and notable places, architectural and building work, ceremonial and celebratory events, housing developments of the Scottish Special Housing Association, aerial photography, castles, industrial sites, landscapes and buildings from around Scotland.

Archive History The collection was donated to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland by the Shillabeer family around 1985 and has been held by Historic Environment Scotland and its predecessor organisations in the period since. All material in the donation has been retained.

System of Arrangement The material is catalogued by subject in eight series. Physically the collection remains in its original order with series distributed between boxes and so the description at file level includes the unit ID and box location to enable the material to be accessed.

Access Conditions Open, but note that access may be subject to provisions outlined in the Data Protection Act and conservation requirements. The collection material is in a range of photographic formats including glass and film negatives, which are fragile and require careful handling and the use of nitrile gloves. Some negatives are noted as damaged and warped and a few glass plates are cracked. Please contact the archive to confirm access in advance of a visit.

Administrative History Paul Shillabeer was born in 1899 and was a photographer based in Edinburgh. From 1948 until 1973 he was the official photographer of the Edinburgh International Festival. He lived and worked at various locations around Edinburgh including Greenbank Grove (1943), Spylaw Road (1949), Canaan Lane (1953), Windmill Street (1956) two locations in Hanover Street (1956 and 1960s) and Queen Street (no dates available).
