Scope and Content Gravestone commemorating Mary Scott, Teviothead churchyard, Scottish Borders This gravestone commemorates Mary Scott, wife to a local tenant farmer, who died in 1745 aged 58. Finely executed, this portrait depicts an angel, though perhaps it represents the soul of Mary Scott in Heaven. At her waist she holds a rose, a common feature of the portraits at nearby Castleton Old Churchyard, probably the work of the same mason. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art.
