Description Report & Correspondence, maps & photographs: 'Caerlaverock Castle Site; and its Association with Drumlanrig' by T C Bell

Date 2005

Collection General Collection

Catalogue Number MS 7838

Category Manuscripts

Scope and Content This folder contains correspondence between T C Bell and His Grace, the Duke of Buccleuch, with information on the survey of Drumlanrig carried out by Mr Bell in 2003. Within it, is advanced a hypothesis that Caerlaverock was the site of a major Roman harbour for transhipping coastal cargoes to smaller vessels capable of navigating up the River Nith to Drumlanrig. In 2003 evidence of a large harbour at Drumlanrig was found; in 2005, an extensive harbour system, now silted and reeded, was delineated at Caerlaverock. Also included are notes on Roman Vallum type defences in Cumbria. The 3 black and white photgraphs, and the last 4 colour photographs, relate to Cumbria, the last photograph and diagram to Waterfoot on Ullswater; and some miscellaneous other documents.
