Scope and Content Aerial view of a Roman temporary camp at Oakwood, Scottish Borders Identified on RAF aerial photographs in 1949, the Roman temporary camp sits on the south side of the Ettrick valley some 600m south-west of Oakwood steading. It was excavated in 1951-2. Only this north-eastern angle of the camp still survives, seen here under a light covering of snow. The camp lies within a thick rampart with a broad external ditch. After a day's march, Roman soldiers would construct a defended camp. A V-shaped ditch was excavated using tools they carried. The upcast formed a low mound into which each soldier sank two wooden stakes which he carried to form a barrier. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
