It was the scene of not a few stirring historical events, not the least remarkable of which was the slaughter of the garrison of Douglas Castle within its walls, on Palm Sunday, March 19, 1306-7, by the adherents of the good Lord James Douglas, previous to the burning of Douglas Castle, commemorated in history by the name of the Douglas Larder...The existent portions of the Church were built by Archibald Douglas, about 1390: but a small piece of the wall of the older edifice is still to be seen at the base of the tower'.
