Scope and Content Titled: 'Bothwell Bridge' with descriptive caption: 'Bothwell Bridge, a handsome structure of four arches, takes the Glasgow and Hamilton highway across the Clyde, near Bothwell village. It was the scene of an engagement, in 1679, between the Covenanters and the army of King Charles II, commanded by the Duke of Monmouth, assisted by Claverhouse and Dalzell. The Covenanters were defeated. Four hundred of them were killed, and twelve hundred taken prisoners. The aspect of the bridge and the appearance of the scenerey in its vicinity have been considerably changed within the last fifty years. The bridge was formerly 120 feet in length, and it rose with and aclivity of 20 feet. It was only 12 feet in breadth, and was fortified with a gateway near the middle. It is long since the gate and gateway were removed. In 1826, the width of the bridge was increased 22 feet, by a supplemental addition to its upper side, and the hollow on the south bank was filled up so as to make the carriage-way quite level. The lower face of the bridge, however, from which this view is taken, presents nearly the same appearance as it did in the time of the Covenanters'. PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM No.164: LANARKSHIRE ALBUM
