Scope and Content This structure report outlines the results of archaeological investigations, undertaken from June to August 2006 and February to March 2007, during early stages of the redevelopment of Balmerino Farm Steading which stands to the immediate N of the modern precinct of Balmerino Abbey. The derelict farm buildings are being converted into residential units by Country Property Developments who commissioned the archaeological investigations during all ground-breaking activities associated with this work. The investigations were undertaken according to conditions imposed by the planning authority, Fife Council, and, in the case of one of the buildings which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, by Historic Scotland. The work was a continuation of a project started in 1996 but which was shelved at an early stage. Because of the high probability that the remains of abbey buildings survived within the area, service trenches were excavated by the archaeological team and uncovered several structures and features of great interest. Development faltered but was revived in 2002; some investigations took place inside the putative barn by Scotia Archaeology in 2003. The excavations in 2006-2007 were undertaken by John Lewis and Sam Scott of Scotia Archaeology (2006-2007). The account of the excavation is followed by an inventory of the farm buildings (Structures A to R), lists of references, contexts, finds, drawings, photographs, a plan, and an appendix, being the 1996 structure report to Lucas Design Studios. (32 pages, with 12-page appendix) Structure report to Country Property Developments
