Scope and Content Fort and settlement at Inveresk, East Lothian This Roman fort and civilian settlement are at Inveresk. The presence of Roman remains was first noted in 1565 when parts of an altar were found. The main fort, built during the Antonine period (2nd century AD), was located in the late 1940s. This map shows the location of the fort in relation to the modern towns of Inveresk and Musselburgh. Much of the fort lies below the churchyard of St Michael's Church. The civilian settlement was to the E of the fort itself. The site was first excavated in the 1940s, 1970s and the 1990s. It is the most extensive and best preserved Roman settlement in Scotland. There appears to be at least two phases of occupation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
