Scope and Content Located at right angles to the Fountainbridge thoroughfare, and directly opposite the site of the former Edinburgh slaughterhouses, sits Chalmer's Buildings, 88 Fountainbridge. Built in 1855 by Patrick Wilson (c.1798-1871), this range of three-storeyed 'artisan houses' were erected under the same principles as Wilson's other work in the city establishing some of the earliest 'Colonies' housing in Pilrig. This development was named after Dr Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847) who was one of the leaders of the Disruption movement of 1843 which led to the formation of the Free Church of Scotland. Fountainbridge Free Church was built in the same year, also to designs by Wilson, on an adjacent site to the west, but this was demolished c.1985 and the site now houses a modern office block.
