Scope and Content Specimen ward, Craig Dunain Hospital (Northern Counties District Lunatic Asylum), Leachkin Road, Inverness, Highland Craig Dunain Hospital, originally the Inverness District Asylum, was opened in 1864 on a magnificent site overlooking Inverness. It was the third district asylum to be built in Scotland following the 1857 Lunacy (Scotland) Act and was designed by James Matthews, an architect from Aberdeen. This shows a specimen ward following expansion of the hospital in the 1890s to combat overcrowding. It demonstrates the importance attached to clean, well-decorated, well-furnished surroundings in which to treat patients. The piano shows the emphasis placed on music and other activities to amuse patients. In 1874 the walls of the hospital's airing courts were demolished giving patients greater freedom when taking fresh air. From its inception, the hospital encouraged amusements such as weekly dances, concerts, lectures, and recitals and sports such as bowling, curling, cricket and shinty.
