Scope and Content This three-storeyed-plus-attic tenement at 206-8 Canongate, Edinburgh incorporates the former Weir's Close. The present building was redeveloped by Edinburgh's City Architect, Ebenezer James MacRae (1881-1951), as part of his Canongate Improvement Scheme in 1930/1. Along with several others on the Canongate, this tenement was rebuilt incorporating serveral design features of the vernacular architecture expected in a traditional Scottish burgh, whilst also improving the facilities within. This particular tenement has rusticated rubble stonework on the main elevation and retains traditional timber-framed, multi-paned sash and case windows. The attic floor has bipartite windows in piended dormers to the outer bays, with a single window within a gabled dormer in the central bay. Following his participation on a Department of Health tour of the continent looking at housing estates across Europe, MacRae brought back ideas which influenced the design of local authority housing across Edinburgh in the 1930s. The redevelopment work he implemented at various sites on the Canongate was just one part of this attempt to improve living conditions for families in older properties across the city. Other tenements redeveloped on Canongate are at Nos 100-110 and 221-9.
