Scope and Content This shows the carved panel on the front elevation of Bible Land, 185-7 Canongate, Edinburgh. This 17th-century tenement, dated 1677, was built for the Incorporation of Cordiners (shoemakers) and subsequently restored in 1956 by Robert Hurd & Partners as part of their wider Canongate improvement scheme. The restoration of this four-storeyed-plus-attic, five-bayed block has retained the traditional features of the tenement, including the rusticated rubble stonework, timber-framed multi-paned sash and case windows and this pedimented panel above the timber door accessing the upper floors. This panel bears the shoemakers' knife with flanking cherubs above an open book which is inscribed with a quote from Psalm 133: 'Behold how good a thing it is and how becoming well, Together such as brethren are in unity to dwell' . Robert Hurd & Partners also restored several blocks on the Canongate during the `1950s and 1960s, including 238-48 Canongate in 1955 (238-44) and 1963-4 (246 and 248) as part of a wider improvement scheme for the Chessel's Court and Canongate area.
