Scope and Content This shows a public hall designed by Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson at Harry Younger Hall, Lochend Close, Canongate, Edinburgh. This was built as part of a major redevelopment of the area which includes three blocks on the Canongate (65-71 and 97-103 Canongate and Brown's Close) built between 1961 and 1969 by the architects for City of Edinburgh Corporation during a period of regeneration and slum clearance in the Old Town during the 1960s. This single-storeyed hall sits on Lochend Close north of the block of Spence, Glover & Ferguson housing at 97-99 Canongate. It was built as a replacement for the (Canongate) Kirk Boys' Club's gymnasium which stood opposite Panmure House further south up the close. Built 1967-8, it incorporates part of the wall of the tenement which stood on the site on its south elevation (right). With varying pitched roofs, it is red-harled to match the adjacent housing. It was extended in October 1973 and refurbished in 2012. It is named in memory of Lt Col Harry Younger of the Lothian and Borders Yeomanry, who was killed in action at St Valery in 1940. Younger was a member of the famous brewing family associated with this area of Edinburgh. Sir Basil Unwin Spence (1907-76) was one of Britain’s most celebrated Modern architects of the post war era, who carried out many housing schemes across Scotland and the UK, and went on to design many prominent buildings recognised around the world. Some of his most well-known works include Coventry Cathedral (1951), Hutchesontown/Gorbals Area C (1958) and the redevelopment of George Square for Edinburgh University (1959 on). From 1964, the Edinburgh-based Sir Basil Spence, Glover & Ferguson practice was formed between Spence, John Hardie Glover (1913-94) and Peter Scott Ferguson (1916-69) and continued to operate under this name until 1992.
