Scope and Content This shows the former maltings of the Balmoral Brewery at 136 and 138 Calton Road, Edinburgh, now converted to housing. The Balmoral Brewery was established on this site in the mid-19th century for Gordon Blair. The distinctive pagoda-style roof to its malt kiln (left) is a style usually associated with distilleries rather than breweries. This malt kiln was added in the late 1890s, as it is not shown on the OS 1:500 map of 1895. The brewery closed by 1937, with many of the buildings demolished. By 1966 the maltings were in use as a motor repair workshop, and in 1982 it was converted to housing by Nicholas Groves-Raines, architect. Built of rubble stonework, the main three-storeyed block (left) stretches uphill along Campbell's Close, while the boundary wall which surrounded a gasometer in the adjacent site (right) has been incorporated into a large block of housing stretching along Calton Road and returning uphill along Lochend Close further west. The main maltings block and malt kiln, seen here, retain many features from their original function, including the lanterns rising from the roof ridge, the small window openings and the timbered hoist platforms on the east elevation of the malt kiln. A timbered balcony has been added on the north gable end stack of the main block.
