Scope and Content This shows the rear elevation of the four-storeyed, four-bayed 124-126 Canongate, Edinburgh, which dates from 1685 but was restored in the 1970 when the red harling was put on the building. The rear elevation has been altered to accommodate an extension to the property (left). Just left of the square pend is the original stairtower, which has also been altered to incorporate the addition. This section has been given the same red harled treatment as can be seen on the front elevation. The wide spacing of the windows to the front elevation is quite unusual, but these are traditional timber-framed, multi-paned sash and case, apart from the ground floor, which have been recessed within the frames. A pedimented date panel remains exposed between the ground and first floors between the western two bays on the Canongate frontage. The property was converted to offices and flats during the restoration in the late 20th century.
