Scope and Content This is a view of the Bull's Close elevation of The Tun in the north-eastern section of Holyrood Road, Edinburgh. This area has been completely redeveloped during the early 21st century with the building of the Scottish Parliament at the eastern end of Holyrood Road and Canongate, and subsequent associated infilling of gap sites created following demolition of various breweries along Holyrood Road. The Tun was completed in 2002 to designs by Allan Murray Architects and was built on a gap site created by the demolition in 1995 of Scottish & Newcastle's Holyrood Brewery which had closed and lain empty since the late 1980s. The building follows the long thin line of the burghage plots which formed the typical Scottish burgh layout of Canongate. The front portion is constructed from angled concrete colums clad in pre-patinated copper, weathered zinc and glass, and leans out over the pavement on Holyrood Road. The rear portion of the building incorporates part of the former brewery and retains the brick facade and window openings of this 19th-century structure. The internal structure of the historic building has been completely rebuilt to suit its new uses, the new double-glazed casement windows reflect the profile of the original windows, and the over-sized lanterns in the roof reflect the louvred ventilation shafts of the maltings.
