Scope and Content This shows the front elevation of the redeveloped 232-234 Canongate, Edinburgh. This block, previously occupied by a series of 18th-century tenements, was redeveloped by Robert Hurd & Partners in 1958-66 during a major restoration and redevelopment of Chessel's Court to the rear. This block on the Canongate retained the four storeys of the original tenement, but the arcaded ground floor was opened up to provide access through to Chessel's Court behind. 232 Canongate (left) retains the rusticated stonework facade, with pantiled roof, while 234 is cream-rendered, with a recessed top floor and tiled roof. All windows are single-paned rather than the traditional multi-paned sash and case style found elsewhere on the Canongate.
